The original church in Chamula is hundreds of years old. Because people here cannot afford burial plots, they often bury their dead one atop the other in the same grave with multiple crosses marking the same plot.
We came here with a guide and took a few pictures.
No cameras are allowed in the church. The floor is covered with straw and there are hundreds of lit candles all over the floor, walls and altars.
Traditional ancestral customs are still adhered to here. Families have spiritual advisers, who may sacrifice live chickens in the church as part of old rituals. Coca Cola is widely used in these ceremonies also.
On market day this area in front of the church is totally crowded with people.
